Which scanners are best for my organization?

A scanner must be selected in the context not only of the characteristics of the objects to be scanned but also of the intended use of the scanned image. There is no sense in purchasing an expensive scanner when the resulting images will be used only for Web site postings. On the other hand, creating digital master files for unknown future use requires strict attention to detail and an understanding of how image information manifests itself and can be properly captured.

Scanners and their associated software can have an effect on image quality. The source of the documents and the amount of information on the paper can have an immediate impact on file size, storage medium, and storage space required to meet the business needs.

Scanner feed mechanism plays a large role in scanning and employee efficiency. Scanners that are too slow or have paper feed problems will end up costing the business valuable dollars in lost productivity.

Scanners come in various sizes, offer different features and can be reviewed in categories: Workgroup, Departmental, Production, Multifunction and Distributed.
