Eastern Ontario hospitals share key patient records across the continuum of care with Microdea’s Clinical Document Repository (CDR)
Kingston, ON, August 2011 - Microdea in partnership with Bell concluded the implementation of the South East and Champlain LHINs’ Clinical Document Repository. The project was initiated in September 2010 as a joint effort from LHINs 10 and 11 to build a regional Electronic Health Record.
The goal of this initiative was to develop a regional repository that would be a key component in the delivery of an EHR for citizens of Eastern Ontario. "The CDR Project has enhanced patient care by expediting patient results and communication between the hospital and family physician." explains Sherri Hudson, Executive Director, Upper Canada Family Health Team.
The solution, which is now in regular use, consists of:
- a universal HL7 V3 and V2 integration layer
- a Clinical Repository that connects Brockville General Hospital and The Ottawa Hospital with two Family Health Teams, located in each LHIN.
Patient Records are securely stored in a robust and scalable data repository, enabling physicians and medical staff to immediately see data for a newly transferred patient.“We are now able to electronically share discharge summaries and DI reports with family health teams across both LHINs. This saves significant time and helps physicians deliver optimal care to patients.” says Rowland Taylor, Project Manager, Brockville General Hospital.
The CDR project was implemented within the time frame expected by both LHINs and in compliance with eHealth standards.
“This is a leading implementation of a regional health record in Ontario and it is eHealth standards-based. Microdea is very excited that our technology is being used to improve health outcomes,” says Colin Ruskin, Vice President of Microdea. “Currently two hospitals and two clinics from the South East and Champlain LHINs are online and sharing patient information, and we expect that as more hospitals and family health clinics are connected to the system, physicians and medical staff will be able to access a larger variety of patient records.” adds Ruskin.
